Winter safety on the Oregon Coast

Friday, November 27th, 2009

The winters along the Oregon coast can be very hazardous whether you are inland or on the coast.   Inland, you will often find snow and very icy roads.  You should carry chains and watch the winter warning advisories; studded tires are aloud during the winter months but be sure to take them off in the early spring to avoid a rather hefty ticket from law enforcement.  The coastal range often sees a bit of snow, but normally you will not need chains.  Always carry a bag of sand, shovel, flashlights, blankets and some extra food just in case you get stranded for a short period of time.  Let you friends and neighbors know where you are going and when you plan to arrive just in case something happens and you do not reach your destination.   The Oregon coast sees huge amounts of rain, very high winds and wind gusts sometime topping 80mph; the seas begin to boil with huge swells and crashing waves.  Never, ever turn your back to the sea because sneaker waves can come without a moments notice.   Also, be careful of debris in the water and along the beaches.   Make sure you have good windshield wiper blades; properly inflated tires and carry the above mentioned emergency gear.  Sadly, the coast takes the lives of people every year.
